Redistricting

About the Redistricting CommissionCommission DutiesInformation.

What is Redistricting?

Proposition 11, The Voters FIRST Act, passed by the voters in November 2008, and amended by Proposition 20 in November 2010, authorized the creation of a Citizens Redistricting Commission to adjust the district boundaries for the U.S. House of Representatives, the state Assembly, the state Senate and the Board of Equalization.

With a state as big and diverse as California, who draws the lines and how those lines are drawn will truly shape the future of our state. The Commission gave this power to real people--political candidates, lobbyists and big political donors can't serve. The Commission is made up of five Democrats, five Republicans, and four members from neither of these parties, so every view will be heard.

The full Commission held public hearings in communities throughout California. Go to We Draw the Lines to see the final maps approved the Commission and certified by the California Secretary of State. Also on this website are the dates and locations of the Commission's public hearings and other Commission activities.

What Exactly Did the Commission Do?

The Citizens Redistricting Commission:

  • Sought and listened to public testimony and comments on the maps
  • Evaluated census data, statistical materials and other relevant information
  • Drew new district maps for the U.S. House of Representatives, the state Senate, the state Assembly and the Board of Equalization

The League is opposing two referenda which are being circulated to overturn the Commission's redistricting plans for the state Senate and Congress.
